#1: It’s not as easy as it looks
You might watch home makeover shows on HGTV and think real estate looks really fun and easy. However, those TV shows “don’t really depict how things are really done,” says Sherri. “It’s a glamorous job on one hand, and you can see a lot of agents make a lot of money, and it looks really easy,” but “it’s not,” she insists. “I think what people don’t understand is what it really takes.”
Real estate can be easy if you like challenges, you like to solve problems, you like to help people, and you’re driven to succeed, Sherri explains. But the hard part, which people don’t realize, is “finding people that want to move and finding good buyer and seller quality leads.”
When you see top agents out there doing millions of dollars of business a year, keep in mind that it took them years to develop that business. It didn’t come quickly.

#2: You have to actively drive business
Another misconception is that business will just come to you. Many agents sit around hoping that someone will show up to an open house or hoping that someone will call them up and want to list their house. Instead, Sherri says, you should be actively driving traffic to your open houses and pursuing new leads outside of your sphere.
“I think agents count on their sphere too much,” Sherri says, “and then they’re disappointed that it doesn’t happen.”
#3: It takes grit and perseverance to be successful
Success just doesn’t fall in your lap, asserts Johnson. It takes “grit” and “constant perseverance.” The daily routine of getting appointments, and constantly having appointments, and building a pipeline of future business is what it really takes to be successful in real estate.
“If you stay focused and just say ‘Nothing’s going to get in my way’…anything is possible,” encourages Sherri.
