Maine Real Estate Appraiser License Requirements

The Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, Board of Real Estate Appraisers, has established the minimum educational requirements for an appraisal license. The minimum educational requirements include the following:

Trainee Real Property Appraiser

  • Education: 75 hours of appraisal education, including the 15-hour USPAP within the 5 years immediately preceding application for the trainee license
  • Experience: None required
  • College-level requirements: None required
  • Exam: None required

Licensed Residential Real Property Appraiser

  • Education: 150 hours of appraisal education, including the 15-hour USPAP
  • Experience: Must hold a valid license and complete 2,000 hours of experience in no fewer than 12 months
  • College-level requirements: None required
  • Exam: Required

Certified Residential Real Property Appraiser

  • Education: 200 hours of appraisal education, including the 15-hour USPAP
  • Experience: Must hold a valid license (trainee real property appraiser or licensed residential real property appraiser) and complete 2,500 hours of experience in no fewer than 24 months
  • College-level requirements: Associate Degree of higher. In lieu of the required degree, 21 Semester credit hours in the following subject matter courses: English Composition; Economics (Micro or Macro); Finance; Algebra, Geometry, or higher mathematics; Statistics; Computer Science; Business or Real Estate Law
  • Exam: Required

Certified General Real Property Appraiser

  • Education: 300 hour of appraisal education, including the 15-hour USPAP
  • Experience: Must hold a valid license (trainee real property appraiser or licensed residential real property appraiser or certified residential real property appraiser) and complete 3,000 hours of experience in no fewer than 30 months
  • College-level requirements: Bachelor's Degree or higher. In lieu of the required degree, 30 Semester credit hours in the following subject matter courses: English Composition; Macro Economics; Micro Economics; Finance; Algebra, Geometry, or higher mathematics; Statistic; Computer Science; Business or Real Estate Law; and 2 elective courses in Accounting, Geography, Agricultural Economics, Business Management or Real Estate
  • Exam: Required
